A Life in Cricket: Ben Redwood – Kia Oval

Must read

How did you originally get into cricket?

I originally got into cricket through playing in the back garden with my dad. Cricket was a big part of my life since I can remember. At school, I would play at lunchtime and after school, whilst also going to watch Somerset with my family.

What did you do before you worked in cricket?

Before working in cricket I was Digital Editor at The Rugby Paper, The Non-League Paper and The Football League Paper. Additionally, I worked for Somerset in the summer of 2021 alongside my masters in Sports Journalism.

When did you first join Surrey?

I joined Surrey in June 2022.

Why did you join Surrey?

I joined Surrey for lots of different reasons. I wanted to work for a club that was steeped in tradition, but one that tried to be a good neighbour to its community. Working on the Men’s and Women’s teams was a huge factor. Additionally, the role suited me as it placed emphasis on growing Surrey the brand and looking to grow the game as whole through working with the Surrey Cricket Foundation and ACE Programme. Some of my favourite days since joining Surrey have been with ACE and the SCF.

What do you most enjoy about your current role?

I love being around professional sport, both with the Men’s and Women’s teams and in the office, where I am gaining a better understanding into the business of sport. I love seeing players taking opportunities on the pitch as you’ve got to know them on a personal level. The most enjoyable aspect of winning the County Championship in 2022 was seeing a group of younger players grab opportunities with both hands. I just love the Rey really..

What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?

The biggest challenge I face in my role is the busy nature of the schedule. Being cricket orientated means spending a lot of time away from home. Additionally, watching Surrey play Somerset has and will always be a challenge for me as I have been a Somerset member ever since I can remember.

What are you most looking forward to in cricket in 2023?

I’m looking forward to welcoming back our members for the first day of the home County Championship season against Hampshire, and also looking forward to our T20 double header with the South East Stars in May.
