Erie County Parks ignites outrage among golf league members

Must read

I am a longtime member of the Elma Meadows Women’s Golf Club.

The Erie County Parks Department is implementing new policies for the existing leagues at Elma Meadows and Grover Cleveland golf courses. The leagues are comprised of women, men, veterans, seniors and corporate/church groups. Some of these leagues have existed at these courses for decades. In a unilateral decision, the county will only allow nine-hole play for leagues. This only applies to players participating in league play, not the rest of the golfers. The decision was made by the county with no input from the league presidents. An attempt to negotiate postponing this decision so that the leagues could have input fell upon deaf ears.

The league presidents were notified of this mid-December. Unfortunately, planning for the next season ha1d already begun, so many modifications will have to be made.

We are all Erie County taxpayers. We pay the same fees as all golfers at these courses. No legitimate rationale or data was provided to back up this major change. Perhaps the county could accommodate our leagues by grandfathering us into a choice of nine- or 18-hole play as it has always been.

Please reconsider, Erie County Parks.
