Czech Petra Kvitova, the No 15 seed, moved into the last 16 of the Indian Wells by edging out Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 24 seed, 0-6, 6-0, 6-4 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Monday night.
Kvitova, ranked No 15, will face American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the 33-year-old Czech defeated American wildcard Elizabeth Mandlik (6-1, 7-5).
Ostapenko, ranked No 25, won against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich (7-5, 3-6, 6-2) in the previous round of the Indian Wells tournament.
