After 12 games without a goal, Makhtar Gueye is finding form at just the right time for RWDM

After a 4-0 defeat away to Cercle Brugge on the final day of the regular season, RWDM looked destined to be relegated. The side played with very little heart or desire and looked resigned to their fate. Striker Makhtar Gueye was sent off late on, compounding a run of 12 games without a goal for the former Oostende man.

Fast forward a month, and Gueye has helped his side turn things around. After a 0-0 draw with Charleroi to start the play-offs, Gueye found the net in the sides huge 3-1 home win over Eupen. They then followed this up with a 4-2 win over Kortrijk, with Gueye once again amongst the goals and also providing an assist. The tall striker has always shown glimpses of what is a ton of potential, with good technical ability and an eye for goal. He could have had even more goals during this play-offs, but missed a penalty against Eupen.

Gueye joined the side in the summer after a failed loan spell in Spain with Real Zaragoza last season. His best time in Belgian football came in his debut season for Oostende, when he scored 13 goals during the 2020/2021 campaign. He followed this up with 12 goals in 32 games, before a fall out with management saw him leave on loan. So far this season he has scored 10 goals in 32 games for RWDM and could certainly surpass the 13 he got for Oostende.

While automatic survival may be beyond RWDM, with Charleroi six points ahead with just three games to go, the side have opened up a five point lead over both Eupen and Kortrijk. If they can beat Kortrijk again next weekend, they will guarantee their spot in the relegation play-off by avoiding defeat to Eupen on the 11th of May.
