Celtic looking to sign Dutch goalkeeper for free

It is hard to predict Celtic’s transfer plans these days considering how the last few windows have turned out. But it seems almost certain that the club will sign a long-term goalkeeper next summer. Joe Hart, who has been the number one for the past three years, has already announced that he will be retiring at the end of this campaign.

On the other hand, Scott Bain’s contract is up this summer as well. At the same time, Benjamin Siegrist has been linked with a move away from Parkhead for a while, having never gotten his chances since joining in 2022.

So, Celtic might need to sign more than one goalkeeper next summer. And it looks like a Dutchman, who might be available as a free agent, is on their radar.

As reported by Brabants Dagblad (via AD), Etienne Vaessen who will be a free agent next summer, can look forward to some interest. PSV and Celtic have their eye on the RKC goalkeeper.

Vaessen is 28 years of age and is currently playing for RKC Waalwijk in the Eredivisie. His current deal with the club is set to run out next summer.

Celtic’s interest in the player is interesting since he has only been able to keep four clean sheets in the Eredivisie this season. Perhaps that should not be surprising though considering that RKC Waalwijk are relegation contenders.

Vaessen would not be the blockbuster name that Celtic fans would be hoping for to replace Hart. It is very possible that he could be brought in as a backup option, as the Hoops might need to fill those roles as well with the futures of both Bain and Siegrist up in the air as well. It remains to be seen how things play out.
