PELLA — Facing a streaking Nebraska Wesleyan University side, the Central College men’s tennis team earned an American Rivers Conference tournament quarterfinal win 5-1 Tuesday.

The Prairie Wolves (4-8) had won the final two matches of the regular season while the Dutch (9-12) entered on a two-match losing streak.

“We came out a little tight in doubles,” coach Ryun Ferrell said. “They were a different team than we faced earlier this season. They are healthy and playing well and with some confidence.”

Central was still able to win two of three doubles matches. Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy (freshman, Kerrville, Texas, Tivy HS) and Alejo Marcon (sophomore, Resistencia, Argentina, Pella Christian HS) combined to win 8-4 at No. 3. Alex Slaymaker (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) and Ayden Fletcher (junior, Waukee) also won 8-7 (7-4) at No. 3.

Chedzoy finished the night 2-0 after notching a 6-0, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles.

“He came out fast in the first set,” Ferrell said. “He had a 5-4 match point and then his opponent went on a roll. He was able to bounce back and dominate the tie breaker. He did a good job to take control of the match and win it.”

Marcon also went 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Travis Subbert’s (freshman, McKinney, Texas, North HS) 6-0, 6-3 No. 5 singles gave Central the fifth point to win the match.

“We regrouped in singles and played a little tougher,” Ferrell said. “Our young guys got it done for us.”

Central advances to the semifinal Thursday where they will take on No. 1 Luther College in Decorah at 4 p.m.

“I’m looking forward to taking on their best lineup,” Ferrell said. “It’s going to be a long trip, but we’re excited for the challenge.”
