Fenerbahçe await Union St Gilloise in Europa Conference League Round of 16
After a thrilling victory away at Eintracht Frankfurt, Union St Gilloise will once again be up against one of European football’s best in stadium atmospheres when they face Fenerbahçe in the next round of the Europa Conference League. The first leg will take place in Brussels on the 7th of March, with the return leg in Istanbul following the week after.
Union managed to overcome Frankfurt thanks to a wondergoal from German forward Dennis Eckert. The former FC Ingolstadt man gave the side a 2-0 lead on the night, which proved crucial when the Bundesliga side pulled one back late on. The Belgian league leaders must now face a Fenerbahçe side that are second in the Turkish Süper Lig, two points behind leaders and rivals Galatasaray.
During the Conference League group stages, Fenerbahçe won four and lost twice as they topped their group on goal difference ahead of Bulgarian side Ludogorets. Veteran striker Edin Dzeko has led the way for the side domestically with 18 goals in 25 games, with a further two in two during the European campaign.
