A Listowel man has been convicted of theft after he stole cans of beer from a local shop.

Wayne Leahy (38) of Lumberjacks, 19 Church Street, Listowel was charged with stealing the eight cans of Dutch Gold from the Spar Supermarket on November 11, 2023 at a loss of €12 to the business.

The court was told that Mr Leahy picked up two four packs and walked out of the shop.

Mr Leahy has 23 previous convictions – two of which are for theft. His most recent conviction for theft was in July 2023, the other dates back to 2007, the court was told.

His solicitor Brendan Ahern said that Mr Leahy ‘has fallen on hard times’ and has a drink problem which he is trying to control.

“He is trying to cut-down but he is alcoholic,” he said.

He said the value of the items stolen was low and that Mr Leahy has given him compensation for the shop.

Judge Philip O’Leary said he hopes Mr Leahy would get back on the straight and narrow and he convicted and fined him €100 for the offence.
